BABAR SUMMONED TO ATTEND POLICE “SHOW TRIAL”

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) and Police have informed Babar that he has been summoned to attend the disciplinary hearing of one police officer for brutally assaulting Babar on 2 nd December 2003. The hearing is due to commence on Monday 11 April 2005 at Woolwich Crown Court.

The IPCC and Police are trying to play dirty games by summoning Babar to a kangaroo tribunal. It is not one officer who assaulted and tortured Babar that day, but several . Babar and his wife have made it very clear that they do not believe in the “show proceedings” and therefore refused to attend. There are several reasons for this, outlined clearly in a letter to the IPCC:

  • The investigation was not conducted fairly or thoroughly. It was conducted in a biased manner to protect Police interests
  • The IPCC's final report disregarded the reports and opinions of three medical experts who physically examined Babar and took the medical opinion only from one doctor, who never even saw Babar.
  • The IPCC failed to address the fact that the Police openly changed their story four times before deciding to discipline one officer. First claiming that all of Babar's injuries were old, then saying that some were old, then claiming he violently resisted arrest and now that one officer used excessive force during the arrest.
  • The fact that a scapegoat has been made out of one officer to spare the others and the senior officers from blame.

It is now clear that the IPCC and Police are trying to legitimise the assault and end this matter, which has exposed the reality of Anti –Terror raids and caused them bad publicity. They have therefore rejected Babar's refusal to attend an unfair trial and summoned him to Court.

It has now been 16 Months since Babar was attacked in his home by Anti-Terrorist Police Officers during his arrest. He was later released after six days without charge. He has still not recovered from the physical and psychological effects of his assault by Police Officers in uniform.

Had the matter been the reverse whereby a group of civilians assaulted a police officer, they would have all been charged with a criminal offence. This would have been especially the case if there was clear evidence of a conspiracy to cover up the truth. However, in this case, only one of the several police officers is being subjected to a mere disciplinary hearing.

Babar and his family will not give up the fight for justice until the matter is investigated fairly and every officer guilty of assault, torture and the mockery of the religion of Islam are formally prosecuted.
