Release : Statement from the Family of Babar Ahmad In Response to The Rose Inquiry
Report Released Today
Thursday
21st Feb 2008
Now
that the Rose Inquiry has established that Sadiq Khan MP's visits with Babar Ahmad
were bugged, we would like to explicitly know whether the recordings have been provided
to the Americans and whether other legally privileged visits of Babar Ahmad were
bugged as well. We find it hard to believe that senior police officers were unaware
that Sadiq Khan was an MP.
Sensitive legal
issues were discussed in these meetings relating to both Babar Ahmad's defence in
any future proceedings and his civil case against the Metropolitan Police for assault
and torture in 2003.
We have instructed
both our criminal and civil lawyers to urgently take the legal steps necessary to
get to the bottom of this mess.
In a statement
from prison, Babar Ahmad said: “Sadiq Khan is an honourable
man who came all the way to prison to see me several times. I, a British citizen,
was tortured by the Metropolitan Police in 2003 and have since been detained in
prison without charge for four years. Is it really a threat to ‘National Security'
if I discussed this with my MP?”
