First press statement from Mrs Ahmad, wife of Babar Ahmad

Flawed decision by the CPS

It has now been one year since my husband's initial arrest on December 2003. On 02 December 2003 , Babar Ahmad was brutally tortured by Anti-terrorist Police officers when they broke into our house in the early hours of that morning. They repeatedly kicked and punched him in front of me. After my repeated calls for them to stop, they ignored me and continued. Babar was left with over fifty injuries to his body, two of which were life threatening.

To bring about justice in Babar's case has been and continues to be an uphill struggle. First we were told by the officers in the initial hearing at court, that Babar's injuries were old injuries. They then retracted their statement and said that some of the injuries were old. Now the Crown Prosecution Service has informed us that Babar violently resisted arrest! How many more lies are we going to be subjected to? It has been one year now and no Police officer has been suspended or charged with what they did to Babar.

I would also like to point out that it has now been six months since a formal complaint was made to the General Medical Council (GMC). This complaint was made in connection to the inadequate medical treatment that Babar received in Police custody by the Police doctors. So far the GMC have failed to bring those doctors to account for their professional misconduct.

Recently we have learnt of the GMC's role in the Harold Shipman inquiry. Do we now have to be subjected to another Shipman case where the GMC is failing to respond to professional misconduct? For more than one year now those doctors have continued to practice whilst posing a risk to the general public.

I will conclude by saying that the family of Babar Ahmad will not give up the fight for justice in order for those officers and doctors to be brought to account for what they did to Babar. We hope that no one else has to experience the same harrowing ordeal that Babar has been made to endure.
